IT: The Strategic Business Partner for Environmental Management

Green IT Expo 2008

My first proper public speaking slot. My employer at the time, AEA Technology, asked me to speak at the Green IT Expo, held on 4 and 5 November 2008 at the Barbican in London, and I gave the talk on the Tuesday.

The session argued that Green IT should be about more than shrinking IT’s own energy footprint through things like virtualisation. IT can also capture the business data that environmental management depends on, such as energy use and employee behaviour, and it can digitise products and processes to cut energy, paper and waste. The seminar planner describes it as AEA showing how practical applications of IT, from transport and fuel efficiency to carbon trading and environmental reporting, can save businesses money.

I wrote about it at the time in Talking Green IT strategy at the Green IT Expo.
