I want everyone to be able to use this site. It aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA.

What you can expect

  • Colour contrast that meets AA in both light and dark mode, with a toggle in the header and your system setting respected by default.
  • Full keyboard access, a visible focus outline and a "skip to content" link.
  • Meaningful alternative text on photos, with decorative images hidden from screen readers.
  • A sensible heading structure and labelled navigation landmarks.
  • Text that can be resized and pages that work from mobile screens upwards.
  • Reduced motion respected: if your system asks for less motion, animations are turned off and the home page photos stop rotating. Otherwise the rotation has a pause button.
  • Media players load only when you choose to play them, and slide decks include the text of each slide.

How it is tested

Pages are checked with the axe-core automated accessibility engine against WCAG 2.2 A and AA in both light and dark mode, and reviewed by hand. Automated tools only catch some issues, so feedback from real users is especially welcome.

Known issues

  • Some posts in the archive (2007 to 2022) were migrated from an old blog and may have missing image descriptions or broken images.
  • Some older posts originally published on LinkedIn lost their images when LinkedIn's image links expired.
  • Linked content on other sites, such as podcasts, videos and PDFs, is outside my control.

Reporting a problem

If anything on this site is hard to use, please let me know. Tell me the page and what went wrong and I'll try to fix it.
